I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for Jesus! Wow … and I can say is just, “Wow”!!! I love how David portrayed his longing for God’s word. “I opened my mouth, and panted:” reminds me of a baby bird waiting for its mother to put a worm in its opened mouth. That baby bird lives to be fed by its mother. I also pictured a man who is crawling through the desert, panting for lack of water. In light of these two mental images, can you see David’s desperation in this verse? It seems that David considered his longing for God’s word a matter of life and death, doesn’t it?

How do you feel about God’s word, Christian? Are you like David? Do you long to hear from God through His word as much as David? Why do you think David felt this strongly? David had been near death; he had strayed from God (as with Bathsheba); he had victories (as with Goliath), etc. Many facets of David’s life are reflected in the Bible but one thing he desired was God’s law.

Psa 119:11  Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

If David had heeded this verse throughout his entire life, he would have prevented himself a lot of heartache (he lost his son due to his unfaithfulness and his orders to have Uriah killed). He learned through the years that the only way to prevent sin was to hide God’s word in his heart! We are so blessed today to have the bible at our fingertips in many different mediums. Being born again gives us the wonderful opportunity to obey God’s word without giving way to temptation.

1 Jn 5:3  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Luk 11:28  But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Obeying the bible is not supposed to be a hardship or burden. If it is, you must think about the time you claimed salvation and whether or not you truly repented. One can talk the talk but if he doesn’t walk the walk, something is not right. The Holy Spirit resides within the born again believer and helps us when we fall into temptation. That is why it is so important to have scripture verses committed to memory so that you can turn to them at any given time.

We cannot blame someone else or say “the devil made me do it”! After all, we’re commanded to obey God, amen?

Act 5:29  Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

God promises His child that He is with us all the time, through His Spirit. He provides the way to escape these temptations if we ask Him.

1 Co 10:13  There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Are you struggling, Christian? Get into God’s word!! Pant for it as David did. Long for it as a baby bird longs to be fed!
