(John 6:60 [KJV])
Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard [this], said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
(John 6:61 [KJV])
When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?
Has the Lord spoken to you through the Scriptures recently and you’ve just not liked what you read? Or maybe you’ve heard some preaching that you just didn’t like. I’ve been there … I’ve even shoved it aside justifying it in my head as “being legalistic.” But was it really? Legalism, as it relates to the Scriptures, is anything that adds to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His plan of salvation. The Pharisees were legalists because they burdens on the people that even they themselves could not keep.
But what is it that you have read or heard that bothers you? Is it something that God is trying to remove from your life? If so, will it hurt you? God would never do anything to hurt us for He is our Father. He wants only to do things for our own good, both spiritually and physically. Let’s say God is working in your life on the type of music you listen to. Will removing ungodly music from you life be bad for you? What negative things can come from it? But good will come from it – you won’t be fulfilling the lust of your flesh! If God convicts you of smoking, will the end result be bad for you? Of course not!
There are times that we hear a message or read a portion of Scriptures and we’re offended because it’s a hard pill to swallow, just like those in today’s text. Notice what the disciples did after they heard … they murmured amongst themselves. Birds of a feather stick together, don’t they?
Remember, God would never ask you to do something that would be bad for you. He only wants your well being. It may come with a cost, but it will bring eternal rewards 🙂
