Therefore I love Jesus above gold, yea, above fine gold! The first thing I thought about was the Parable of the Pearl of Great Value when I read this verse. Jesus taught us what kind of passion this individual had in his search for the pearl of great price. He searched the world over! Is our passion for Jesus even close to the merchant in this parable? We must search our heart in order to make this comparison.

Mat 13:45-46  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: 46  Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

It’s a short parable but packs a wallop, doesn’t it? It’s only two verses but it speaks volumes! Jesus is talking about the kingdom of heaven and how it is sought by a pearl merchant. He apparently has been traveling near and far in order to find that perfect pearl. Let’s delve in and glean from this simple parable. Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines “merchant” as:

A man who trafficks or carries on trade with foreign countries, or who exports and imports goods and sells them by wholesale.

This merchant went all over to find those pearls. Let’s compare this merchant to someone who is searching for spiritual truth. Someone who is searching for God wants to know how to get to heaven. In one’s search, he will research all kinds of religions to find the right one. I remember prior to my salvation loving the Beatles. Wikipedia states:

In February 1968, the English rock band the Beatles travelled to Rishikesh in northern India to take part in a Transcendental Meditation (TM) training course at the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The visit followed the group’s denunciation of drugs in favour of TM[1] and received widespread media attention. The band’s interest in the Maharishi’s teachings was led by George Harrison‘s commitment,[2][3] and it changed Western attitudes about Indian spirituality and encouraged the study of Transcendental Meditation.[4] The visit was also the most productive period for the Beatles’ songwriting.

But one must remember that religions can be quite deceptive. Although the Beatles denounced drugs at this point (which is a good thing), they replaced it with something far more dangerous! Transcendental Meditation causes a person to “open their minds” to allow “enlightenment” to enter. However, this enlightenment is not from God. The devil disguises “spiritual truth” in many different ways.

Pro 14:12  There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Pro 16:25  There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Mat 24:23-24  Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.  (24)  For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

How can one know for sure he’s not being deceived? The bible says that Satan is transformed into an “angel of light”! He causes the seekers of truth to see what appears to be “the truth” but is far from the truth.

2 Co 11:13-15  For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.  (14)  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  (15)  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

When I was 24 or 25 years old, I started my search. I was raised Roman Catholic and knew that my heart was empty and cold. There was no spiritual spark in me and I really wanted the truth. I read Nostradamus’ writings; I joined a bible study at my place of business; I searched catholic writings in hopes to find answers. The bible study leader actually thought that I was born again because I was a master of foolery! 🙁 I don’t say this proudly but with much shame. Although I was a “good catholic,” I was truly far from knowing God and who He is or even living a godly life! But, friend, I was living the catholic life. I was doing all the right things that the church taught me. But living the catholic life and living according to the scriptures are two extremely different things. Like the Beatles, I was deceived by religion. Although my religion appeared to be “of God,” it was very far from God.

I liken my search for God to this pearl merchant.

Rom 12:2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

As I was searching for my pearl of great price, God sent a dear friend to lead me to Him using the truth of the scriptures. Jesus said, Joh 17:17  Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. Through the scriptures, I learned what I needed to do to enter the kingdom of heaven. It was plain – it was simple – even a child could understand how.

Mat 19:14  But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

This pearl of great price cost me nothing but it cost Jesus Christ everything! Jesus Christ, the King of kings, left His heavenly throne and took on the form of man. He lived a sinless life in order to fulfill the scriptures that a spotless lamb had to be sacrificed to atone for the sins of the Jews. Jesus, the spotless (sinless) Lamb of God, died a cruel death on the cross to shed His own blood. It is Christ’s blood that covers the sins of man and saves man from an eternity in hell. Jesus rose from the dead and now reigns in Heaven until His return. In order to achieve salvation, one must accept Christ as Saviour – His gift of salvation, the Pearl of Great Price. What a beautiful picture!

1 Pe 1:18-23  Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;  (19)  But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:  (20)  Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,  (21)  Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.  (22)  Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:  (23)  Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

After I accepted Jesus as my Saviour, my life changed! I was different and everyone who knew me saw it. The old Kate was no longer doing those things that dishonored my Saviour. Instead, my heart was being changed daily by the work of the Holy Spirit. With this changed heart, I grew in knowledge of the scriptures and eagerly applied them to my life.

2Co 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

There is joy that comes with salvation, friend. It’s a joy knowing that you no longer have to worry about your eternal destination! You are guaranteed heaven because Christ purchased it for you! It has nothing to do with anything you can possibly do. If it did, you could brag on how you got there. The scriptures clearly show us that it is a gift from God and not of works, amen? After one is saved, that person’s life will most definitely change! If he stole, he will make restitution and steal no more. If he lied, he will be honest with the one he lied to and lie no more. That life is changed by the Holy Spirit who resides within the new believer and the Holy Spirit will teach the new believer from God’s word.

Eph 2:8-9  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  (9)  Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Rom 14:17  For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Let me know show you through the scriptures as my dear friend did with me. Leave me a comment and I will be happy to show you how you too can have a personal relationship with the Lord, Jesus Christ! You also can have that Pearl of Great Price and know for certain that you are going to Heaven. You no longer have to hope you will go there, but you can know that you are going there!! 🙂

1 Jn 5:13  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
