As a catholic, I could never say that I had total peace in my heart about my relationship with God. I can honestly say that the emotions that I felt for my religion were: fear, anxiety, helplessness, defeat, and worry (to name a few). Jesus said,
~John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
I could claim to have peace, but not the true peace that Christ is speaking of in this verse. The peace that Christ speaks of is a “now” peace. Not the peace of eternal rest in Heaven. Christ said He was leaving His disciples peace and giving them peace – right then and there. Jesus also told His disciples not to let their hearts be troubled or afraid. Therefore, God’s peace can be possessed – right now!
If you were to ask me 28 years ago if I had this peace that Jesus spoke of, I would have had to honestly tell you, “No!” My religion was not providing me with this same peace that the Lord said He was giving.
Dear catholic, you don’t have to be honest with me. But you do have to be honest with yourself. Do you have true, complete and real peace in the bottom of your heart? It is achievable, my friend.
God wants you to have peace – right here on earth – a peace that you can live with knowing where you will spend eternity. It’s an important doctrine. He would not hide this from you – especially when it involves where you will spend eternity. It is not through religion but through the precious blood of Jesus Christ and His work on the cross for your sins. Repentance brings salvation and a peace that can be found while you are yet living. We can leave this earth knowing that we will enter Heaven the moment we die. We do not have to do anything for this peace. Jesus gives this peace freely – we cannot earn it, nor can it be mustered on our own.
I pray that you will get into the Scriptures and read for yourself about this blessed peace that the Saviour provides!
~Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
