Things That We Need From Hell

Luke 16:19-31

1- Vision – Verse 23 – “He lift up his eyes in torment”
a) If we could see that place of torment
b) If we could see the tormentors
c) If we could see those flames up close our mindset would change
d) We need a vision of being engulfed in flames looking out at those being comforted in safety
e) We need a vision of being in a place of safety and looking on as men, women and children are engulfed in flames.
f) If we could actually see what hell was like wouldn’t we be more motivated to warn others of that place?

Proverbs 29:18
Where there is no vision, the people perish…

We need to get a vision of hell

2- Crying – Verse 24 – “He cried, have mercy on me.”
a) God is a God of mercy
b) God is a God of love and grace
c) But God is also a God of judgment and wrath
d) We need to learn to cry for those that are under Gods judgment and wrath
e) If we cared enough that it brought us to tears maybe we would be more motivated to do something about it.

Amos 5:16-20
16 Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing. 17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the LORD. 18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light. 19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. 20 Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

We need to learn to cry out to God for the lost.

3- Thirst – Verse 24 – “Dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue”
a) If we had a few minutes in hell maybe we would thirst more after righteousness. It would not take long in a place that was devoid of any righteousness to develop a desire for just one drop of it to cool our unrighteous tongues.
b) If we could spend some time in a place of eternal death maybe we would thirst more for that eternal life.
c) Just a few minutes in hell might give us a thirst for some of that living water.

John 4:10
Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

We need to learn to thirst after righteousness and that living water

4- Flame – Verse 24 – “I am tormented in this flame”
a) If we had some of the flames of hell burning in our hearts perhaps we could get on fire for the Lord
b) We need to have a burning desire to see the lost get saved
c) We need to be burning with the fire of God yet not consumed, in our service to the Lord, a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable.

Exodus 3:2
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

We need to kindle a little flame into our lives.

5- Remembrance – Verse 25 – “Remember that thou”
a) As born again Christians we need to remember where we came from and what we have been saved out of. Not in discouragement because of our past sins but out of encouragement of those sins forgiven. As God forgave us He will forgive others if they have a chance to hear the gospel message.
b) We need to remember where we would be right now if we had died in our sins.
c) If we could only remember what it was like to be in slavery to sin maybe we could do a better job of helping others escape from that bondage.

Acts 20:35
I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

We need to remember what we have received so that we can be even more blessed by what we give.

6 – Separation – Verse 26 – “There is a great gulf fixed”
a) We need to put some separation between the world and us. A sinner that is on his way to hell should be able to look at us and see that there is a difference, and that there is something good about what we have.
b) We need to fix a gulf between us, and the sin that abounds around us.

2Corinthians 6:17
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

We need to separate ourselves from unclean things.

7 – Prayer – “I pray thee therefore father”
a) We need to get a burden for the lost before we are ever going to see anyone get saved. Many Christians have the attitude of “Me and my three and no more.” But if we could just spend a few minutes in hell we would surely have a great burden to keep even our worst enemies out of that place.
b) And like the rich man in our scriptures, just a few minutes in hell and we would be begging and pleading in prayer for our lost family and friends.

Psalm 55:22
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

We need to have a burden for the lost so that we can pray and cast our burden upon the Lord.

8 – Understanding – Verse 31 – “If they hear not”
a) We need to understand that the lost need to hear the gospel message while there is still time. They need to hear the Law of Moses so that they can see their sin before a Holy God. They need to hear the prophecies of the coming Messiah and they need to hear how those prophecies were fulfilled in Jesus’ death burial and resurrection.
b) We need to understand what it is to die in sin with no hope and no peace.

Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

We need to understand and gain wisdom.

Hell is a place of:

Darkness – 1 Samuel 2:9, Matthew 8:12, 2 Peter 2:17

Destruction – Job 31:3, Psalm 103:4, Proverbs 10:29, Matthew 7:13

Eternal Separation – Proverbs 15:29, 2 Thessalonians 1:9

Fear – Psalm 73:18-19, Proverbs 10:24

Fire – Deuteronomy 32:22, Psalm 11:6, Isaiah 66:24, Matthew 18:8

Desolation – Isaiah 59:10, Ezekiel 26:20

Humiliation and shame – Isaiah 5:14-15, Ezekiel 32:24

No Hope – Job 8:13, Proverbs 11:7, Ephesians 2:12

No Mercy – Psalm 36:5, Psalm 109:17

No Peace – Isaiah 57:21, Ezekiel 7:25

No Rest – Isaiah 57:20, Revelation 14:11

Torment – Luke 16:23

Let us all take the things that we have learned from hell and use them to pull others out of that pit.
