Today’s Ponderings – Still Waters

Print Friendly

~Psalm 23:2-3 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Our Shepherd, the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, has promised that He will lead us to green pastures, still waters, and in paths of righteousness. What comfort these verses bring to the child of the King! :)

But is our journey here on earth filled with green pastures and still waters? Are we always on the path of righteousness? Although Christ leads us, the ultimate responsibility lies with us following! Amen? Green pastures provide sheep with food and still waters provide sheep with drink. Sheep don’t go looking for food and water on their own. When they do, they are caught in thicket and drowned in rushing waters. They need a Shepherd who will make sure that the danger is avoided.

It’s the same with us “human sheep”  :wink: When we go forward against God’s will, we end up stuck in the thicket or we begin to drown in the rushing waters of life. We are constantly bombarded with “follow your heart” but that heart is deceitful and wicked (Jeremiah 17:9)! It’s the last thing you want to follow! What you do want to follow is that path of righteousness found in God’s Word. There is no going wrong here. Seeking His will through His Word and through Godly counsel, will always lead you to green pastures and still water!

The following hymn is so appropriate for today’s ponderings :) I hope you are blessed!

He Leadeth Me
Joseph H. Gilmore

He leadeth me, O blessèd thought!
O words with heav’nly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where’er I be
Still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

Refrain

He leadeth me, He leadeth me,
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful follower I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.

Sometimes mid scenes of deepest gloom,
Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom,
By waters still, over troubled sea,
Still ’tis His hand that leadeth me.

Refrain

Lord, I would place my hand in Thine,
Nor ever murmur nor repine;
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since ’tis my God that leadeth me.

Refrain

And when my task on earth is done,
When by Thy grace the vict’ry’s won,
E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,
Since God through Jordan leadeth me.

Refrain
