~Luke 10:40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
Poor Martha! It’s a shame that her legacy is that she was distracted
She got caught up in the moment and her choice was to be cumbered (distracted) with much serving. But before I get self righteous, am I not the same way at times?
What happens when I take my eyes off the road when I’m distracted while driving? An accident is most assuredly the end result. To be a safe driver, I must keep my eyes fixed on what is ahead of me, in my line of vision.
David knew what to do to avoid distractions in his life. He knew that without God, he could do nothing!
~Psalm 57:7 My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.
~Psalm 108:1 A Song [or] Psalm of David. O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.
~Psalm 112:7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.
Life will distract me for a moment – that is a fact! But I don’t have to stay distracted! This distraction did not catch God by surprise as He allowed it for a purpose. Just as Peter was distracted by the storm and began to sink, the same will will happen to me if I fix my eyes on the circumstances around me. (Matthew 14:24-31)
The remedy is to “fix my heart” on the Lord Jesus Christ! I can learn from David’s experiences and how he kept his heart fixed. As a result, I won’t be afraid of those distractions because I will follow David’s example by trusting in the Lord. How much did David trust the Lord? Psalms records 36 verses! Is it any wonder that David was the apple of God’s eye? (Psalm 17:8)
