The 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church declares:

“It is clear therefore that, in the supremely wise arrangement of God, sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture, and the Magisterium of the Church are so connected and associated that one of them cannot stand without the others. Working together, each in its own way, under the action of the one Holy Spirit, they all contribute effectively to the salvation of souls.” (Pg. 29, #95)

According to this quote, the catholic church teaches that the Bible, the church’s traditions and teachings, and the magisterium (the task of giving an accurate interpretion of the Bible) are of equal importance. (See also Pg. 25, #82.) Magisterium and tradition/doctrine are just as much the Word of God as the Bible according to the teachings of the catholic church.

“Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit. And (Holy) Tradition transmits in its entirety the Word of God which has been entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit. ” (Pg. 26, #81)

The key to this statement is to determine what must be done when these three disagree. The catholic church’s catechism gives this answer:

“The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living, teaching office of the Church alone. This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome.” (Pg. 27, #85)

The catholic church teaches that it is the only one that God has entrusted to interpret His Word.

“For, of course, all that has been said about the manner of interpreting Scripture is ultimately subject to the judgment of the Church which exercises the divinely conferred commission and ministry of watching over and interpreting the Word of God.” (Pg. 34, #119)

So what is the catholic church teaching? It is teaching that it’s not the Bible that has final authority but the catholic church and whatever its current teachings are.

If this is true, then God’s Word will say it is true. God is perfect, sinless, holy and has never made a mistake. However, the catholic church (like many other churches) has had its shares of mistakes – bad popes, laws that have been changed, etc. However, God’s Word never changes because God’s Word is perfect because He is perfect.

Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever. Psalm 119: 160 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever. Psalm 12:6-7

The Scriptures are clear what to do with someone claims to be a prophet but his prophecies don’t come true. He is a false prophet. All his prophecies must come true if he is to be considered a true prophet of God.

(Deut. 13:5) God does not allow for any mistakes or error. He is pure – He is holy – He is perfect – He is truth.Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. John 17:17

Mostly all professions have a guide in which to judge their standards. They call these standards “Standard Operating Procedures” – a plumb line or measuring stick, if you will. The Word is our measuring stick. All of God’s Word is to be used to teach us, to reprove us, and to convict us from sin. Not just part of it – not just the New Testament – but all of it.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (2 Ti 3:16) (emphasis mine).

What happens when someone changes God’s Word? What happens when someone takes away a word here and a word there? What happens when someone adds a word here and adds a word there?

For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Revelation 22:18-19 (emphasis mine).

We are exhorted by Paul to mark those who do this.

Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. Romans 16:17-18

He goes on to say what happens to those who teach different from what the Word teaches.

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:8 (emphasis mine).

If God was so adament about the requirements of a prophet, then He is just as adament about His Word being changed. My dear catholic friend, if you are stuck on the Final Authority of God’s Word, ask yourself why? Do you defend your church because it’s the only thing you have ever known – because your parents and their parents have believed this way? Would God stop you from reading His Word? Of course not. In its pages are the power of God.

And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? Mar 12:24

Allow His Word to teach you. You will find many contradictions between what God has said and what the catholic church has taught you. When there is a contradiction, who should you believe? When you stand before God after you die, do you think your excuse will be enough when you say that you obeyed the church instead of His Word? I would be fearful of this. God’s Word is our plumb line – our measuring stick – not the traditions of men or a church. What if the catholic church is wrong? You can’t go wrong with God’s Word.

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” Colossians 2:8

Search God’s Word to find out if you are right or wrong! Don’t let someone else tell you. You are responsible for your own salvation and your own spiritual growth. No one will stand in your place to say that it was their fault that you were mistaken. You alone are responsible for your actions. The New Testament saints studied and we are encouraged to study for ourselves.

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Acts 17:11

These Christians did not have the New Testament yet but they still searched the Scriptures daily whether what they were hearing were actually true. Remember

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (2 Ti 3:16)

These same Scriptures are considered truth and God’s Word (not that of man).

For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God… 1 Thessalonians 2:13

Man’s words will pass away but not God’s.

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Matthew 24:35

So what happens when one chooses to keep man’s word instead of God’s?

… If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings… John 14:23-24

My dear catholic friend. I don’t write this with hatred in my heart. I write this to encourage you to read your Bible. If there’s even a remove possibility that you are wrong, wouldn’t you want to know? If you were to stand the pope right next to Jesus and you had to choose whose words you should believe, who would you choose? Of course you would choose those of Jesus. It would stand to reason. Don’t make this mistake. The Word says that the heart of man is wicked.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Jer 17:9

The Word says the all have sinned – there is not one person on this earth that has not sinned.

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Rom 3:23

Only God is perfect and only God’s Word is perfect because man is a sinner and, therefore, man’s words cannot be perfect.
