As you know, alpha and omega are the first and last letter of the Greek alphabet. It’s interesting that Jesus used these to define His character. Noah Webster defines alpha as: “First or beginning and was formerly used also to denote chief; as, Plato was the Alpha of the wits.” Webster defines omega as the last and ending. Just reading the four verses in Scripture that contain this phrase, you can determine the meaning for yourself and why Christ referred to Himself as such.

Rev 1:8  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Rev 1:11  Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
Rev 21:6  And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
Rev 22:13  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

I love how the Lord stresses that He is the beginning! He doesn’t say I was the beginning – exact words are important! Time didn’t start when Jesus first existed. No, Jesus was there all along and all things exist because of Him. Col 1:16  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Jesus is the reason all things in this beautiful world exist! He is the God of the universe and all that is in it. He’s the Creator and was there at the beginning. He spoke everything into existence. He is also the ending of all things. Just as the Garden of Eden was the His perfect habitat for Adam and Eve, so will Jesus cause earth to be perfect once again. Many say that the Bible says that the lion will lay down with the lamb but that is not what Scripture says.

Isa 11:6  The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
Isa 11:7  And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
Isa 11:8  And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den.

How wonderful will that be? I would love to be able to pet a lion or leopard and not be afraid of being torn to shreds 🙂 But let’s get back to the Alpha and Omega. Jesus is telling us that there isn’t anything before and after – He encompasses it all. He is the beginning and the end. Jesus is the eternal God and has and will continue to exist. Yes, it’s hard to understand this with our finite minds but that doesn’t stop the word of God from being true. Amen? We believe in faith despite how difficult it is for us to wrap our minds around the concept.

Jesus is also the God of the Old Testament and the New Testament. Isaiah 41:4 Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he.

There are no other gods – Jesus is the first and is the last of all gods – He is the only God. Jesus Christ, as the Alpha and Omega, is the first (the beginning) and last (the ending). This is explained in multiple ways throughout Scripture but here are only a couple: He is the “author and finisher” of our faith in Heb. 12:2, our faith begins with Jesus and He will see our faith grow till the end. He is found in the first verse Gen. 1:1 and in the last verse Rev. 22:21. He is the first and last, He encompasses all of salvation, from the Old Testament to the New Testament through justifying us before God and sanctifying us by His blood! His work of the cross was depicted in the Old Testament from the time of Adam to the priest’s sacrifices and then His work was completed in the New Testament showing Jesus as the finisher of His redemptive work through His perfect blood.

The Alpha and the Omega describes our Lord and Saviour beautifully. This title cannot apply to any other of the world’s gods. The title cannot even remotely apply to Buddha, Mohammad, Confucius, or any other. Only One can have that title and that is Jesus Christ! Amen and hallelujah! Glory to God!
