Today’s Ponderings – Mind Control

~Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.

A dear friend and I were having a discussion on ways to keep one’s self from going into the deep dark thoughts which lead to depression. She mentioned that she just doesn’t “go there” in her head or she would be a goner!

As I meditated on our conversation, my thoughts fell on Philippians 4:8. I couldn’t help but think that she was feeling what Paul had been feeling. He knew the remedy to negative thoughts. He knew what it would take to chase away those feelings that would hinder the Holy Spirit’s work in his life.

There’s nothing but good that can come of thinking on good things – healthy thoughts! But once you start dwelling on the circumstances around you and the negatives, it doesn’t take long before your spirit is taken to the depths of discouragement. Soon thereafter, depression follows. Haven’t you been around people who only speak of hardships and difficulties? No amount of encouragement on your part seems to penetrate through their dark layers. These people walk a dark path but they don’t need to.  If only they would heed Paul’s exhortation to control their thoughts!

I praise the Lord for my friend’s testimony! I know of her struggles yet, like Paul, she has a healthy thought life.  She practices Philippians 4:8 on a daily basis in order to keep her thoughts positive and good.
